Umbilical cord blood

Green Fact

A study by the Environment Working Group tested the umbilical-cord blood of 10 American babies born in 2004 and found an average of 200 industrial chemicals  and pollutants  in each baby’s blood.

I am not surprise at all with this fact because I know it’s true. If a mother is working in an industrial company that uses chemicals then your body has exposed to it.  If you are also an alcoholic I’m pretty sure that’s toxic and can pass on to a baby. They say that breastfeeding is the best milk and I agree.  But if a mother has too much chemicals in her body then the baby can get that too! What do you think?

That is very distressing to hear about the amount of chemicals in the umbilical cord. I can’t see how they would not impact in some way on the child.

  2. That is really shocking, but I guess it shouldn’t be with all the pollution in the world. I understood that breast feeding was best because of the antibodies that the Mother can pass on to her child along with the nutrition. I guess we could have the same concerns with man-made baby formulas and foods.. interesting post for Thinking Green…

Just an additional info. Donating cord blood is medically safe and doesn’t affect pregnancy. Donating poses no health rsiks to the pregnant or the baby. Cord blood was once routinely discarded as medical waste but now its recognized for its life-saving capabilities, ideal for blood transplants because it is rich in self-repairing stem cells.
